NetEase to Purchase all new Servers for Chinese WoW

As you might have noticed in the post update on our blog earlier in the day It's been confirmed: NetEase will be taking over operating the World of Warcraft in China from June 1st -- their new homebase over there is located at wow.163.com. While we initially said that The9 would be handing over their hardware, software, and staff to operate the game, it's not the case. According to IDG News Service, NetEase will be setting up their own servers to play the game. It's a big undertaking, so it is likely that things will be challenging for the first few days. However, Blizzard is confident that NetEase will be able to make the transition after having played several games on the market. It also means that some supercomputers that have been previously covered which are owned or controlled by The9 will be transferred to...

Not that there aren't plenty of uses for to run your business -- despite their stock plummeting on news of the WoW license lapse, The9 also runs a number of other games there which include Guild Wars, Ragnarok Online and a number of other popular Eastern MMOs (not to mention that EA has a stake in the games). In the end, there's got to be a market for supercomputers in conjunction with other educational institutions and companies that's for sure. It's unlikely that all the equipment will remain in the shadows.

But , more importantly, it'll be interesting to observe how NetEase handles the transitionWe've experienced some inventory and other issues here on the Western part of the globe, but we've never had a major loss of information about characters (cue all the Blizzard engineers pounding on the wood). There are undoubtedly a lot of backups in place however, if something goes majorly wrong in the transition between hosts, it could be devastating for the WoW players in China.
